Free Services

Both Termly and PolicyMaker offer free services.

Termly has a free plan that users can access by creating an account.

termly-free-plan

With this free plan, users gete access to any one policy generator plus a basic version of Termly’s consent management platform (CMP).

The consent features include the use of the website scanner and cookie policy generator, plus the following:

There is also a free Termly GDPR/CCPA Cookie Consent Banner WordPress plugin available.

Plus, Termly has free template versions of each generator that anyone can use, which all have comparable legal considerations and clauses to the Generators.

What PolicyMaker Offers Free Users

All of PolicyMaker’s generators are free to use on their website.

Users can select one of the ‘start now’ buttons to begin making a policy. Overall, it’s a very basic website.

Paid Services

Both Termly and PolicyMaker have paid plans available for businesses to choose from.

Termly’s Paid Plans

Businesses that choose Termly can select from three available pricing plans:

  • Starter Plan: $14/month when billed monthly, $10/month when billed annually

The Starter Plan provides access to two policy generators, the Consent Management Platform, the cookie policy generator, and up to 50,000 page views per month.

The Pro+ Plan gives users access to all nine policy generators and the full CMP with unlimited banner views, plus the following benefits:

  • Multi-language supports

  • Auto-updated policies
  • Remove the Termly logo
  • IAB TCF v2.2 compatibility
  • Google Consent Mode v2 compatibility
  • Regional consent rules

  • Multi-user permissions

Termly also has an Agency Plan ideal for resellers and anyone with multiple websites.

It includes all features from the Pro+ plan, plus the following:

  • Multi-user permissions
  • Custom marketing materials
  • Training & onboarding
  • Compliance support
  • Bulk import
  • And more!

To learn more, view Termly’s Pricing Page.

PolicyMaker Paid Plans

PolicyMaker does not offer any paid plans.

Its offerings consist of only the free legal document generators.

Policy Generators

Next, I’ll compare the policy generators offered by both Termly and PolicyMaker.

At this time, Termly offers nine different generators, which are also available as free templates. See all nine in the table below:

Termly Policy Generators Termly Templates
Privacy Policy Generator Privacy Policy Template
Cookie Policy Generator Cookie Policy Template
Terms and Conditions Generator Terms and Conditions Template
EULA Generator EULA Template
Acceptable Use Policy Generator Acceptable Use Policy Template
Return and Refund Policy Generator Return and Refund Policy Template
Shipping Policy Generator Shipping Policy Template
Disclaimer Generator Disclaimer Template
Impressum Generator Impressum Template

In comparison, PolicyMaker offers three policy generators:

  • Privacy Policy Generator
  • Terms and Conditions Generator
  • Disclaimer Generator

They also offer a free non-disclosure Agreement Template.

All of the generators appear to be more similar to free templates, featuring very basic information rather than nuanced, customized details typically added by a Generator.

For example, PolicyMaker’s privacy policy generator asks only basic questions, like whether a site accepts payments or shows ads.

While helpful as a starting point, sites handling payments typically need to disclose details about payment processors and data practices, which may require additional customization.

Consent Management

When it comes to consent management, only Termly offers tools and solutions. PolicyMaker focuses purely on the generators.

Termly’s consent management tools provide include the following features and benefits:

  • Cookie policy
  • Cookie banner
  • Script auto blocker
  • HTML embeddable policies
  • Weekly cookie scans
  • Privacy regulation monitoring
  • Remove Termly logo
  • Custom banner styles
  • Multi-language support
  • Regional consumer rules
  • Auto-updated policies
  • Multi-user permissions
  • Consent log
  • DSAR form
  • Google Consent Mode v2 compatibility
  • IAB TCF v2.2 compatibility
  • Can support Microsoft UET Consent Mode
  • Google CMP Partner with Gold status
  • Google Tag Manager
  • User consent preference center
  • WordPress Plugin available

It’s known for being very easy to set up, install, and maintain.

Privacy Law Compliance

Termly’s policy generators and consent solutions align with several privacy laws from around the world. However, it’s unclear if PolicyMaker products follow any specific laws.

Their website does not mention any specific laws, but instead claims the policies are written broadly enough to be used in any country. There’s a high probability that these generators do not actually comprehensively cover any laws in full.

On the other hand, Termly’s CMP is configurable to meet opt-in and opt-out guidelines in over 80 regions, and their Privacy Policy Generator currently covers 30 privacy laws.

Termly’s legal team and product engineers update the generator regularly to help businesses more easily keep up with the data privacy legal landscape, which is constantly evolving.

You can read more in the ‘What laws does Termly cover’ resource article.

Customer Support

Termly offers multiple customer support channels, but it’s unclear what options exist for PolicyMaker users.

For example, Termly’s customer support team is very highly rated and avenues to request help include:

  • A live chat
  • A working phone line available from Monday to Friday, 9 AM – 6 PM EST.
  • A contact form on their site, which leads to a support email, and
  • Support articles and other content on the website.

As for customer support through PolicyMaker, there is a contact form available on their site, which appears to lead to a support email.

There doesn’t seem to be any other options for users who need assistance.

Customer Reviews + Business Accolades

Termly is well-rated by customers on sites like Trustpilot, but PolicyMaker does not appear to have a review page available.

  • Termly earned a 4.7 ‘excellent’ on Trustpilot based on 533 reviews

Based on these reviews, Termly’s customers are very satisfied with their services.

They love that using Termly saved them time and cleared up confusion, and appreciate the personalized, quick customer support. Several reviewers also mention the ease-of-use and reassurance they feel with Termly in their toolbox.

Of the online reviews that exist for PolicyMaker, users mention liking that the services are free but state that the website can appear ad-heavy and that the actual generators can be buggy when filling them out.

Some users stated that the final policies from PolicyMaker needed to be reviewed and edited.

Additional Features

Termly has additional features that are useful for different kinds of businesses.

For example, all nine of Termly’s generators feature expert-written tips and answers to frequently asked questions.

You can view an example of one of these tips in the screenshot below.

Termly-tips

These tips help simplify the complex process of legal compliance, making it easier to ensure accuracy and when completing these essential legal documents.

PolicyMaker is a very straightforward website that offers just policy generators.

However, they do provide a non-disclosure agreement template users can tailor to their needs, which is unique.

Agencies/Partnerships

Termly offers a customized agency/partnership/reseller program, but PolicyMaker.io does not.

Termly’s Agency plan is for resellers, agencies, and those with multiple websites.

It features everything in the Pro+ as well as additional benefits, including:

  • Bulk pricing discounts
  • Multi-domain management
  • Multi-user permissions
  • Customized marketing materials
  • Training and onboarding support
  • Compliance support
  • Bulk importing, and more!

To learn more, check out Termly’s Agency Page.

Which One Is Right for You?

Both PolicyMaker and Termly offer policy generators that businesses likely need.

Termly’s vast array of policy generators are suitable for creating customized policies that align with applicable laws impacting businesses.

PolicyMaker, on the other hand, is much more basic, and their generators are more comparable to Termly’s free templates.

It’s likely that using one will require a lot of editing and re-drafting to ensure it meets all of your specific needs and isn’t too much of a boiler-plate policy.

However, when it comes to picking the best privacy compliance partner for your business, the choice is up to you!
