Encrypted data is data that has been altered so that only users with a decryption key can access it. It comes in a variety of formats and strengths and is used by individuals, organizations, and governments.

Encryption should not be confused with password protection, which only prevents users from opening a file or accessing a website, the data in the file or on the site remains unaltered and can be viewed by anyone once it’s been accessed.
